Define the space to divide
Describe the space you want to create and how both sides will be used. Include door access, existing windows and the relationship with the rest of the property. A proposed layout may need design or approval checks; a plastered dividing wall does not settle those questions on its own.
Plan studs, doors and future fixings
The framing, board arrangement and openings should follow an appropriate specification. Mark doors and any shelves, cupboards or other fixtures on the plan. Their support is easier to resolve before the wall is closed than after the plaster finish is complete.
Specify acoustic or fire requirements
Ordinary room division, sound privacy and fire resistance involve different requirements. If privacy is important or the design calls for a fire-rated assembly, say so at the outset. The complete wall and its junctions need to satisfy the specification, not just the visible board layer.
Coordinate services, boarding and finishing
Coordinate electrical or other service work with the responsible trades. Agree how the boards will be finished and whether skirting, trim or decoration is included. On an existing floor or ceiling, the edges and any making good should be part of the scope.
Set out the stud partition scope
Quote the partition length and height, number of openings and the finish on each side. Include preparation and waste handling, plus any specified insulation or other components. A clear package avoids comparing a basic frame price with a fully finished new wall.
PRACTICAL SERVICE DETAILS
Common questions
Can a door be included in a new partition?
Yes, a door opening can be specified as part of the layout. Clarify who supplies and fits the door and how it relates to any performance requirements.
How should heavy shelves be planned?
Tell the designer or installer their location and intended load before construction. The support and fixing approach need to suit the complete partition.
Does a stud partition provide sound privacy?
It depends on the system and surrounding construction. If sound privacy is an objective, specify it explicitly rather than assuming any stud wall will achieve it.
Does the quote include moving services?
Not automatically. Identify electrical or other changes and agree responsibility with the relevant trades before the partition is installed.
