The silicone finish and supporting layers

Silicone thin-coat finishes are used with a suitable supporting build-up. The final textured surface relies on what lies beneath it. A new topcoat should not be presented as a way to make loose, incompatible or deteriorated existing material suitable without assessment.

Assess the wall and proposed system

The wall construction and current finish guide preparation and system selection. Silicone finishes can feature in different types of project, including some insulation systems, but a silicone-render quote does not automatically include external insulation. Confirm the complete specification and any separate design responsibility.

Choose texture, colour and edge details

Choose colour and texture using the relevant product samples, then consider the elevation's windows, edges and adjoining materials. Ask for the care guidance for the actual system. Avoid assuming that a finish is maintenance-free or cannot develop defects because of a broad product label.

Compare suitable render alternatives

Monocouche and other render systems may offer alternative routes on suitable backgrounds. Compare preparation, finish, compatibility and the full scope. A lower finish-coat price may exclude work included in another quotation, so check the layers and details rather than only the headline figure.

Include preparation and every system layer

Record the system reference, background preparation, access and every finishing stage. If old render needs replacement, include removal and the approach to exposed defects. State whether fixtures, pipes or other attached items need adjustment by a separate trade.

PRACTICAL SERVICE DETAILS

Common questions

Is silicone render the same as external insulation?

No. A silicone finish may be used within an insulation system, but the finish alone does not establish that insulation is included.

Can it go over existing render?

That depends on the existing material and the new system's requirements. The wall needs assessment before retaining an old finish is assumed suitable.

What preparation is included?

It should be specified in the quotation, including background repairs and supporting layers. Ask what happens if unsuitable material is discovered.

How is the finished surface maintained?

Follow the care guidance for the selected system and address developing defects appropriately. Do not assume every silicone-labelled finish has identical maintenance needs.
