When wall skimming suits the surface
A skim refreshes the face of a wall rather than rebuilding the whole wall surface. It can suit sound plaster that looks rough after wallpaper removal or a properly prepared boarded background. If a wall is badly out of line, a skim alone is not a complete levelling solution.
Check the plaster beneath the skim
The existing surface needs to hold the new finish. Wallpaper residue, flaking paint and previous coatings can affect preparation. Loose plaster and unresolved damp need a separate decision before skimming. Tell the plasterer about areas that have been repaired before or change appearance after wet weather.
Prepare edges, fittings and adjoining surfaces
Agree how the skim will finish around sockets, door linings, windows and skirtings. Reveals and narrow returns take work even though their area is small. If fittings are being moved, have the responsible trade coordinate the work so the new finish is not immediately opened up again.
Plan drying and decoration
Preparation, protection and the finishing work should be included in the schedule. Fresh plaster needs suitable drying conditions before decoration; it should not be painted simply because the room is needed by a particular date. The paint system should also be appropriate to the new plaster.
Set out the wall skimming scope
Give the number of walls, approximate sizes and the current finish. Include photographs showing both a whole wall and any problem areas. If the ceiling also needs attention, include it from the start so the room can be considered as one finishing job.
PRACTICAL SERVICE DETAILS
Common questions
Can walls be skimmed after removing wallpaper?
It may be suitable once paper, residues and the underlying plaster have been assessed and prepared. Damage revealed during stripping can change the scope.
Can painted plaster be skimmed?
Some painted backgrounds can be prepared for skimming. Adhesion and coating condition need checking; a new layer should not rely on flaking paint.
Will skimming straighten a badly uneven wall?
A skim improves the surface but is not designed to correct every change in wall alignment. More substantial preparation or another lining may be needed.
When can new skim be decorated?
Once the finish is sufficiently dry for the chosen decoration system. Confirm readiness and follow the plaster and paint manufacturers' instructions.
